For this topic, we will focus upon the perspective of an individual who might be responsible for oneself or others in some way. Justice is a word then entails many things, not only subjectively, but also objectively. We will try to remain in the objective area of “Justice” for this article.
“Know thyself”
Before we can truly begin, we must recognize that justice requires scalable scope of circumstantial awareness as well as depth of multifaceted knowledge. Socrates supposedly argued that to “know thyself” we must each have already experienced various types of situations wherein facets of our self have been tested, examined, and meditated upon with unassuming curiosity. If this is true, than I urge caution whenever a person claims to be the all-knowing master of themself. Honestly, even if they claim to uphold the theory that we can never fully know ourself, I still caution that actions speak louder than words.
Personal conduct which reflects truly curiosity-driven, engineer minded, unassuming detective, scientific care and discovery when pursuing knowledge about our self can be especially difficult when under supervision. This most often includes when we are observing ourself too closely. The Hawthorne Effect is most often noticed when we are aware that we are being observed by our own self. This may be why organic exploration followed by intentional meditation is recommended, even if the word meditate is replaced by debrief, reflect, or some other translation.
Respect thine enemy
Mentalistism (The Mentalist, 2008 – 2014)
“Someone who uses mental acuity, hypnosis, and suggestion.”
As we scale beyond our self, we find an adage which is supposedly from “The Art of War” by Sun Tzu which reads as “Know thine enemy.” We often assume that we can know others, but in reality all “knowledge” of any person outside ourself can only ever be theory. For the topic of justice this reminds us to truly learn, not merely assume, the tactics (how), resources (what), psychology (who), and objectives (why) of others. Enemy doesn’t have to mean someone we are against. It can be expanded to mean all others involved, friends, family, neighbors, elders, children, strangers, etc. All too often we make personal policies, and have governing policies levied upon us, despite the person or organization creating the policy having little to no curiosity and knowledge about effects in near and distant future upon those experiencing policy enaction.
So often we believe that justice is possible despite lacking knowledge of ourself or others. Sociology, as an umbrella encompassing all social sciences, has begun to include such wide ranges of diverse populations that we commonly ignore millions or the associated studies are too narrow or too old or the parameters of the studies are fundamentally biased all the way down to the thetical question being expounded upon throughout the study process. I love sociology and I believe that it has value in our world, but the way in which it is often conducted, stored, and disseminated seems to be more for the WASP class and less for the plebians of any full population worth of people.
In “The Mentalist”, pseudoscience “statistics” passed off like common sensical plot connections are used via near-intuition acuity “skills” against criminals to guide the characters through investigations without ghosts and superpowers. Some real-life people use mentalism to succeed in fields like law, politics, business, marketing, and religion. None of these professions depend upon it to put food on the table and so their theories become toxic assumptions for the majority of any population as more and more outliers make things seem too chaotic for effective management to ever be seen as cost effective. A grifter on the other hand, needs theories constructed using clues gathered via various mentalist fundamentals to proof and eventually produce results. It is especially effective against the rich because so many sociological statistics are written from the WASP perspective.
The Role of Situational Awareness in Justice
These two words have nearly become a full sentence in the military. When I was new to military service I thought it only critiqued a person’s visual cognizance of their surroundings. After studying sociological topics like “Hearts and Minds” as it pertains to; macro-environmental personal,
Household, Familial,
Cultural, Societal,
Macro-environmental Global, and Infinite Universal.
I have found that the situational awareness required when King Solomon of The Kingdom of Isreal and Judah presided over the 4th generation of All Twelve Tribes of Isreal must have been intense. In the case of two women claiming one baby he would have needed knowledge of not only the nation’s laws, but also the available space for compassion and mercy within the law. Fundamental psychological differences between Mother and Mom, as well as his own limits of conscience would’ve also likely been factors. Among other countable factors there is also the collective conscience of any onlookers as well as their trust in him which he likely carefully cultivated over many years.
Might the baby have still gone to the wrong woman? Absolutely. It is unlikely though because mothers and fathers are listed on the birth certificate while moms and dads are listed on the child’s proverbial heart, and vice versa. This proverbial heart etching can be scaled to describe the relationship between a People and their conglomerate Leadership.
Leaders often discount the value of their Human Capital like how one of the women were willing to take half of the child rather than lose it all. Throughout history this anecdote has played out in the form of continental civil wars which we often simplify to “wars.” There was even a world war, which included a short cease fire and regime change almost like a halftime show during a sports game. In the modern era our world leaders again seem very ready to pit us against each other, to cut the proverbial baby into pieces, rather than expand their sociological scope beyond the immediate concerns of each nation’s narrow leadership class. For example; how can any society see widespread justice via laws, support programs, medicine, and enforcement when the supposedly primary class of US of N. America consists of roughly 7.7% – 14% of the U.S. population?
